Dragon boat races, sailing, marathons, cycling, Spartan races, triathlons, and night runs—outdoor sports are gaining increasing popularity in the BMC. The flourishing “outdoor economy” is generating multifaceted benefits across economic, ecological, and social dimensions.

Building a Premier Water-Based Outdoor Sports Destination
To implement the Guiding Opinions on Developing High-Quality Outdoor Sports Destinations issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the General Administration of Sport, BMC, rooted in its strategic urban positioning and deeply integrated with the Grand Canal Cultural Belt, officially launched the “BMC Water-Based Outdoor Sports Destination” project this year.
Leveraging the canal as a central axis, the initiative will activate both aquatic and terrestrial spaces, integrating competitive sports, leisure activities, and cultural tourism to establish a high-quality outdoor sports destination of international standards, ecological harmony, and cultural depth.

Developing a Comprehensive Water Sports Base
BMC will develop a “1+4+4” system of Grand Canal water sports infrastructure. Anchored by the RUC Water Sports Center, the plan includes the construction of four modern water sports docks along the canal and Yunchaojian River, supported by four fully equipped water sports service stations, creating a complete service network.
To enrich public waterfront experiences, two new waterfront activity zones will be introduced at the Qianhe Xielu Bridge Dock and the Canal West Bank Dock. These areas will offer stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing experiences, providing fresh options for water sports enthusiasts. A series of themed activities—such as youth sunshine sailing, parent-child adventures, and school-community water sports programs—will be launched to promote water sports across all age groups.

Hosting a Diverse Array of Trendy and Stylish Sporting Events
More high-quality sporting events are expected to come to the BMC. According to the plan, BMC will establish a “1+1+N” boutique event system for high-quality sporting activities.

The first “1” refers to one central water sports cluster, serving as the anchor for developing benchmark events in water, ice, and snow sports.
Water-based events will include dragon boat racing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more, with ambitions to enhance both the frequency and caliber of competitions year by year.
Ice sports will utilize the ice rinks at Tongzhou Stadium and Lucheng National Fitness Center to develop regional competition IPs.
Snow sports will activate beginner-level snow tracks in Central Green Forest Park’s Ice and Snow Carnival, hosting snow-based events and ice-snow challenge competitions.

The second “1” denotes the introduction of triathlon signature events,
a multidisciplinary sport combining swimming, cycling, and running that tests the endurance and willpower of its athletes.

The “N” represents a series of trendy and lifestyle sports competitions and events,
including ultimate frisbee, BMX biking, camping, kite flying, night runs, Spartan races, model aviation, international 3x3 basketball, and the popular “Rubber Duck Fun Run,” catering to diverse and intergenerational sporting interests.
