Recently, Songzhuang Art & Creative Town has added another “museum-like venue” — the Wood Knot Carving Museum.

The full name of the Wood Knot Carving Museum is the Beijing Wood Knot Carving Art Museum, covering an area of more than 400 square meters. Inside the museum, not only is there a permanent exhibition hall dedicated to wood knot carving art, but also a Orchid-and-Bamboo Script calligraphy gallery, a Grand Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage display hall, and a space for temporary exhibitions. Together, these establish an integrated cultural platform combiningart exhibitions + intangible heritage transmission + training and educational research.

Wood knot carving art uses discarded old tree burls and knots as its material, shaping ideas from natural forms and deriving meaning from organic grains, embodying the Eastern aesthetic ideal of “harmony between humanity and nature.” By drawing on this unique art form, the museum communicates values of protecting nature and cultivating integrity and virtue, becoming a vivid classroom for many schools to conduct ecological aesthetic education and character education.

The Orchid-and-Bamboo Script calligraphy exhibition area showcases ink works passed down through four generations, guiding students to appreciate the gentlemanly virtues carried through brush and ink; the Grand Canal Intangible Heritage Gallery brings together ICH items from Tongzhou and along the Canal, allowing students to experience the warmth of traditional culture at close range.

Today, the Wood Knot Carving Museum has become an important bridge connecting classroom learning with social practice. As a designated resource site for the citywide “Social Classroom” program for primary and secondary school students, and as an educational practice base for multiple schools, it continues to provide young people with rich and diverse art experiences and ICH-focused learning programs—allowing culture to “come alive” and to be passed on through firsthand engagement.

Songzhuang thrives because of art and flourishes through diversity. The addition of the Wood Knot Carving Museum brings yet another vibrant touch to this fertile ground for creativity. We look forward to welcoming more residents to experience the beauty of wood knot carving and the charm of intangible cultural heritage.
