Today (December 16), a dialogue of Han Dynasty civilization is now unfold. The National Archaeological Site Park of Nanchang Han Dynasty Haihun Marquis and the Heritage Site Park at the Ancient Government Seat of Luxian County jointly present 108 pieces/sets of cultural relics excavated from the tomb of the Haihun Marquis. For the first time, they unveil the mysteries of the Han Dynasty’s dual administrative system of commanderies and kingdoms through a cross-regional comparative perspective of “Southern Marquis State — Northern Commandery.”

Vivid evidence of the Western Han system of parallel commanderies and kingdoms is preserved in two archaeological sites separated by thousands of kilometers. To the south lies the Haihun Marquis State in Jiangxi Province;to the north stands the Ancient Government Seat of Luxian County. One embodies the institutional order of a feudal marquisate; the other records the everyday governance of a centrally administered commandery.

One in the south and one in the north; one marquisate and one commandery—through comparative analysis of cross-regional archaeological finds, the hierarchical governance structure of the Western Han dual system is clearly presented. The relics from the Haihun Marquis tomb reflect aristocratic splendor, while the artifacts from the Luxian Ancient City portray the lives of ordinary people. Together, they outline a complete political, economic, and cultural panorama of the Western Han Dynasty—aptly described as “Two Sites, the Whole of Han History.”

1. Exhibition Overview
Across two millennia of historical change, from the gold and jade artifacts of the Haihun Marquis tomb to the grassroots governance and everyday life preserved in the Ancient Government Seat of Luxian County, the exhibition presents a vivid and multidimensional reconstruction of the Western Han dual administrative system through the distinctive perspective of “Southern Marquis State, Northern Commandery.” It highlights the diversity of Han civilization and serves as a living microcosm of China’s ancient state governance system.
