Recently, the recommended list of “Feel of Beijing” literary landmarks was officially announced. Shaotang Literature Museum in the BMC was selected alongside 17 cultural landmarks, including Ditan Park, Beijing Drum Tower, the Guo Moruo Memorial Museum, and the Lao She Memorial Museum. Together, these sites trace nearly half a century of modern and contemporary Chinese literary history and have become important cultural emblems showcasing the profound artistic and literary heritage of Beijing.

Shaotang Literature Museum
Located in Rulin Village, Xiji Town, the Shaotang Literature Museum serves both as a tribute to the local literary master Liu Shaotang and as a key initiative for preserving and carrying forward canal culture and rural literature.

Liu Shaotang, a renowned Chinese writer of rural literature and a representative figure of the “Lotus Pond School,” drew extensively on rural life along the Jingdong section of the Grand Canal, imbuing his works with a rich and distinctive local flavor. The museum was renovated from the former village committee building of Rulin Village. While preserving the collective memory of local residents, it has revitalized the old structure into a cultural and spiritual space dedicated to the continuation of literary heritage.

The museum is thoughtfully organized into several core exhibition areas. Through texts, photographs, physical artifacts, and carefully reconstructed scenes, it comprehensively presents Liu Shaotang’s literary career. Visitors can gain an in-depth appreciation of the unique charm and profound cultural depth of rural literature, immersively experiencing the unadorned prose of Pu Liu Ren Jia (A Family of Reeds and Willows) and the enduring cultural lineage of the canal.
