According to Beijing's meteorological authority, the city's poplar and willow catkin season is expected to begin around April 6 to 9. The earliest catkins —mainly from white poplars (Populus × tomentosa)—will appear within the 5th Ring Road.
Expected start dates by area
Common health effects
Respiratory symptoms
Itchy nose and throat, frequent sneezing, runny nose, breathing discomfort
Eye irritation
Red, swollen and itchy eyes
Skin reactions
Itchy after contact
How to tell if you're allergic?
The catkins themselves are not allergens. Allergic reactions are usually triggered by pollen, dust, and other particles carried by catkins. If symptoms such as itchy nose or eyes, repeated sneezing, and watery nasal discharge occur regularly around April each year, you are advised to seek medical advice for possible spring tree pollen allergies.
Protective measures
1. People prone to allergies should wear masks, glasses (instead of contact lenses), and light outerwear to protect their exposed skin when going outdoors.
2. Peak catkin hours are usually between 10:00 and 16:00. If you need to do outdoor exercises, choose early morning, evening, or after rainfall when catkin levels are lower.
3. After returning home, use a nasal saline rinse 2 to 3 times daily. Wash your exposed skin promptly with warm water. Seek medical attention if severe itchiness or rashes occur.
4. If catkins get into your eyes, avoid rubbing. Try flushing with clean water or let tears help remove them. Seek medical help if your discomfort persists.
5. During peak periods of catkins, reduce window ventilation. Clean catkins that get indoors with a vacuum or by lightly spraying water on them before sweeping up. Avoid opening your car windows while driving.
